Lead-acid batteries were first invented in 1859 by Gaston Planté. Since then, they have become ubiquitous in many applications due to their low cost, dependability, and ease of maintenance. These batteries work on the principle of converting chemical energy into electrical energy through a reversible electrochemical reaction. The battery consists of two electrodes immersed in an electrolyte solution made up of sulfuric acid and water.

The positive electrode (cathode) is made up of lead dioxide while the negative electrode (anode) consists of pure lead or lead alloy with small amounts of other metals like antimony or calcium. When the battery discharges during usage, lead sulfate forms on both electrodes; this process releases electrons from the negative plate to the positive plate which creates an electrical current.

When you charge a lead-acid battery using external power sources such as solar panels or generators, electricity flows back into the battery cells through its terminals causing reverse reactions that convert lead sulfate back into active materials on both plates again. The cycle repeats itself upon discharge until all active materials are depleted leading to end-of-life failure.

The advantage of using lead-acid batteries over other types is that they can provide high surge currents needed for heavy equipment like power tools while still delivering steady voltage levels required by sensitive electronics without overheating or losing capacity over time due to sulfation buildup inside cells caused by prolonged storage periods without charging cycles which can damage them permanently.

One type commonly found in urban exploration settings is sealed valve-regulated (SVR) lead-acid batteries, which are maintenance-free and self-contained in a sealed case. They can be mounted in any position without spilling electrolyte or emitting gas, making them ideal for confined spaces like tunnels and abandoned structures. These batteries have a long lifespan of up to ten years when maintained properly.

Another type is the flooded or wet cell battery, which consists of multiple cells containing liquid electrolytes that require regular maintenance to prevent drying out or becoming contaminated with dirt and debris. This type is often used in larger applications such as backup power systems for buildings and industrial facilities.

When handling lead-acid batteries, it’s important to take precautions due to their potentially hazardous nature. Lead is toxic if ingested or absorbed through the skin, so always wear gloves and protective clothing while handling them. Additionally, ensure proper ventilation during charging because hydrogen gas can accumulate inside cases leading to an explosion risk if ignited by sparks from nearby equipment.
