Rats are common in urban areas and can often be found living in abandoned buildings or tunnels. They are known for their ability to spread disease and cause damage to property. As someone who has explored many abandoned buildings over the years, I have had my fair share of encounters with these pests.
One of my earliest experiences with rats occurred while exploring an old factory on the outskirts of town. The building had been abandoned for decades and was now home to a large population of rats. As soon as we entered the building, we could hear them scurrying around in the darkness.

The sound of their scurrying feet echoed through the halls as we continued on. It was like walking through an obstacle course, trying to avoid stepping on any of them. At one point, I accidentally stepped on one and felt its tail squirming under my foot.
We eventually made our way outside, but as we walked around the perimeter of the building, we could see hundreds of rats streaming out of various openings in the walls. It was truly a sight to behold – a mass exodus of vermin.
While encounters with rats can be unnerving, they are also a reminder that nature has a way of reclaiming what humans have abandoned. These creatures have adapted to survive in some of the harshest environments on earth and will continue to thrive long after we are gone.
Of course, it’s important to remember that rats can carry diseases such as leptospirosis and hantavirus. If you do encounter them while exploring urban areas or abandoned buildings, it’s best to keep your distance and wear protective gear such as gloves and masks.
In addition to being carriers for disease, rats can also cause significant damage to property over time. They will chew through electrical wiring and insulation in order to build their nests or find food sources.
This can lead to fires or other hazards if left unchecked. In some cases, entire structures may need to be torn down due to extensive damage caused by rat infestations.
As someone who loves exploring abandoned buildings and tunnels, I’ve learned over time how important it is not only take precautions against encountering these pests but also being mindful about preventing their spread into new areas inadvertently brought by us explorers from contaminated areas visited before.
One effective method for keeping rodents at bay is to seal up any gaps or holes in the walls, floors, or ceilings. This will prevent them from entering and nesting inside the building.
Another option is to use traps or poison baits to kill off any rats that have already taken up residence. However, it’s important to be very careful when using these methods as they can also harm other animals such as pets or wildlife.
In some cases, it may be necessary to call in a professional pest control company who can ensure that the infestation is properly eradicated without causing harm to people or other living creatures nearby.
Despite the risks associated with exploring abandoned buildings and tunnels, I continue to find joy in discovering hidden gems within my city. While rats may pose a threat, they are simply part of the urban landscape and should be treated with respect rather than fear.
