One of the most famous military hospitals is Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., which was established in 1909. It played a crucial role in treating wounded soldiers during World War I, II, Korea, Vietnam War, as well as more recent conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2011 it was closed down due to budget cuts and all its services were transferred to Bethesda Naval Hospital.
Another notable hospital is the Presidio Army Hospital located in San Francisco Bay Area’s Presidio National Park. The hospital was initially built by Spanish settlers back in 1776 before being converted into a military hospital after America acquired California from Mexico.
The building underwent several renovations over the years until it became one of the largest hospitals on the West Coast with over 2,000 beds serving both active-duty personnel and veterans during World War II up till when it closed down permanently around 1994.
Fort Ord Army Base Hospital located near Monterey Bay also has a significant history worth mentioning. The facility served troops deployed overseas from its inception up until its closure following the end of Cold War hostilities between USA-USSR that marked an era where there was no need for large-scale troop deployment.
