Don’t Get Trapped: The Importance of Grease Trap Maintenance in Commercial Kitchens

Grease traps are an integral part of any commercial kitchen, as they help prevent fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from entering the sewer system and causing blockages. In this DIY-style post, we’ll explore what a grease trap is, how it works, why it’s important to maintain it properly, and how to clean it.

First off: What is a grease trap? A grease trap is a plumbing device that captures FOG before it enters the wastewater system. It does this by slowing down the flow of water from sinks and other kitchen appliances so that FOG can separate and float to the top while heavier solids sink to the bottom. The remaining wastewater then passes through the outlet pipe into the sewer system.

How does a grease trap work? As mentioned above, when wastewater enters a grease trap, its velocity slows down significantly. This allows time for FOG to coagulate on top of the water surface in what’s known as “the fat layer.” Meanwhile, heavier solids that don’t dissolve in water settle at the bottom of the tank in what’s known as “the sludge layer.”

Over time though if not maintained correctly these layers will build up causing problems with your plumbing or even cause backups which could be costly! That’s why proper maintenance is crucial.

Maintenance includes regular cleaning procedures that should be performed by professional plumbers every three months minimum but may need more frequent attention depending on usage levels or business volume.

So how do you clean a grease trap? First things first – turn off power sources such as electric heating elements or gas burners if applicable. Then follow these steps:

1) Remove all contents from inside of tank including solid waste.
2) Scrape away any excess buildup around inlet/outlet pipes using appropriate tools like scrapers or brushes.
3) Inspect baffles for damage or wear – replace if necessary!
4) Clean interior surfaces thoroughly using hot water with soap or degreaser.
5) Rinse interior surfaces with hot water to remove any remaining debris.
6) Re-assemble the grease trap and restore all power sources.

It’s important to note that cleaning a grease trap is not an easy task for everyone, which is why professional plumbers are often called in to help. They have specialized tools and equipment designed specifically for this purpose, which makes the process much easier and more efficient.

In conclusion, maintaining your grease trap properly is crucial to avoid plumbing issues and even costly backups. Regularly scheduled cleanings performed by licensed professionals will ensure your kitchen operates smoothly while keeping FOG out of the sewer system. Remember: a well-maintained kitchen equals happy customers!
