From Semaphore Signals to CTC: The Evolution of Railway Signaling Systems

1. Semaphore Signals
Semaphore signals were used to communicate between trains and railway stations in the 19th century. They consisted of a series of arms that extended out from a tall pole or post, with each arm having a different position indicating whether it was safe for the train to proceed or not.
2. Disc Signals
Disc signals were another type of signal used on railways during the early years of train travel. These signals were made up of circular discs painted in different colors and mounted on posts along the tracks. The color combinations represented various messages such as stop, caution, and clear.
3. Mechanical Arm Signals
Mechanical arm signals were developed later than semaphore signals but before electric signaling systems came into use. They had one or more mechanical arms which could be moved by an operator to indicate whether it was safe for a train to pass through an area.
4. Electric Light Signals
Electric light signals are still in use today across most railways around the world because they offer better visibility at night and can also be seen from greater distances during daylight hours. These types of railway signals consist of colored lights mounted on poles next to the tracks which flash or stay illuminated depending on what message needs to be conveyed.
5. Interlocking Towers
Interlocking towers are structures built alongside railroad tracks that contain switches and levers that control track switches and other equipment needed for safe train operations.
6. Wigwag Crossing Signals
Wigwag crossing signals were used primarily at level crossings where there was no nearby station or tower within sight distance for operators to manually control gate operations when trains approached them.
7. Train Order Signal Boards
Train order signal boards are wooden signs placed near railway stations that display important information about upcoming trains like their arrival time, departure time, destination etc., allowing customers waiting at these stops know exactly what’s going on ahead of them without any confusion whatsoever!
