Respect for Property: A Memoir

As an urban explorer, I’ve seen my fair share of abandoned buildings and forgotten places. Each location has its own unique history and story to tell. However, what always strikes me is the lack of respect some people have for these properties.

The exploration of abandoned places can be a thrilling experience but it’s important to remember that these are not playgrounds. These are real properties with owners who may still hold emotional or financial ties to them. As explorers, we must show respect for both the property itself and the people who own it.

I remember one particular exploration where a group of fellow explorers had broken into an old factory building through a window they had smashed open. They ran around the place causing chaos; spray painting walls, breaking windows, throwing objects around like toys. It was disheartening to see how little respect they had for this property.

As someone who values exploration as well as respecting others’ belongings, I couldn’t help but feel frustrated by their actions. It’s fine to explore a place and document your findings; take photos or videos as you go along – but don’t damage anything while doing so.

It’s important to remember that even though a building may look derelict from the outside, there could be hidden dangers lurking inside such as asbestos or unstable flooring which could lead to injury if not treated with care.

Before entering any abandoned property make sure you do your research about its legal status and don’t enter private land without permission from the owner first hand. Respect closure signs on gates or doors that indicate entry is prohibited.

When exploring abandoned locations:

1) Take nothing but pictures
2) Leave nothing behind except footprints
3) Don’t vandalize or destroy any part of the property

Remember that when you’re exploring these spaces you’re visitors in someone else’s world – treat it how you would want others treating your own home should they be visiting.

One thing that always sticks with me is a quote from the photographer, Robert Polidori: “The way people leave things behind tells you so much about them.” In other words, how we treat abandoned properties can reflect our own values and respect for others’ belongings.

Exploration of abandoned places can be an incredible way to learn about history and experience new places. But it’s important to remember that these properties are not ours to damage or destroy in any way. We must maintain respect for the property itself as well as those who may still hold emotional attachment to it. As urban explorers let us continue exploring but also practice responsible exploration respecting both the property and its owners.
