Afterward, sewage water gets transported to sedimentation tanks where heavy solids settle down to form sludge while lighter solids float on top forming scum. The sludge is later removed by scraping it off using large machines called skimmers while scum gets pushed aside by mechanical scrapers.

Secondary Treatment Plants:
Secondary treatment aims to remove organic matter from the remaining sewage water after primary treatment. This includes bacteria (from human waste), food waste particles (such as oils and grease) among others.

The second stage uses biological processes involving microorganisms such as bacteria that eat away organic matter in tank-like structures called bioreactors or digesters which break down these materials into simpler compounds like carbon dioxide gas or methane gas which can be used for energy generation purposes at the plant facility itself.

Tertiary Treatment Plants:
Tertiary treatment is an optional third phase that further purifies effluent coming out of secondary treatments prior to discharge back into local watersheds. It uses advanced filtration techniques such as reverse osmosis membranes or ultraviolet disinfection to remove remaining impurities like bacteria, viruses, and other harmful chemicals that are not completely removed during secondary treatment processes.

Wastewater treatment plants work by removing contaminants from sewage water through a series of physical, biological, and chemical processes. The process starts with pre-treatment at the inlet works where large objects are screened out before being transported further into the plant for primary treatment.

Once inside the plant facility, sewage water goes through several stages of treatment depending on the type of plant in operation. After primary treatment, secondary treatments follow where organic matter is broken down by microorganisms living within bioreactors or digesters while tertiary treatments use advanced filtration techniques to produce clean effluent ready for discharge back into local watersheds.

These include increasing urbanization rates which lead to higher volumes of raw sewage water entering these facilities as well as funding constraints due to budget cuts or lack of political support from local authorities.

Moreover, environmental regulations have become more stringent over recent years with new laws such as Clean Water Act (CWA) requiring stricter monitoring and reporting standards for effluent discharges from these facilities.
