The Risks of Urban Exploration: Unsafe Staircases and Elevators.

As urban explorers, we are always on the lookout for hidden gems in the city. We love to uncover forgotten buildings, abandoned factories, and other structures that have been left to decay over time. But as much as we enjoy these adventures, it’s important to remember that there are risks involved in exploring these spaces.

One of the most significant dangers of urban exploration is unsafe staircases and elevators. These structures are often neglected and poorly maintained, which can make them hazardous to navigate.

Staircases

When it comes to exploring old buildings, staircases can be one of the biggest challenges. Many times, they are steep and narrow with rusty handrails or missing steps. In some cases, entire sections of a staircase may be missing altogether.

It’s easy to see why this poses a major risk for urban explorers. One misstep could result in serious injury or even death if you fall from a great height.

Unfortunately, many building owners don’t prioritize maintaining their staircases since they aren’t typically used by tenants or visitors anymore. This means that when we explore these places ourselves, we need to take extra precautions.

Firstly – always wear appropriate footwear with good grip; hiking boots or similar sturdy shoes work best for rugged terrain like stairs within abandoned buildings.
Secondly – utilize your hands whenever possible! Take advantage of any remaining handrails or walls along the sides of the staircase for extra support.
Lastly – pay close attention to your surroundings as you move from step-to-step so you can avoid any loose debris or holes in the stairs themselves.

Elevators

While elevators may seem like an easier alternative than climbing up flights of stairs manually – outdated lifts pose their own set of hazards (even more so than decrepit stairwells).

Older elevators were built with outdated technology which has not aged well over time: worn cables snap at random intervals; faulty circuitry poses electrical concerns; motors might burn out mid-ride. These issues can be amplified when they haven’t been serviced regularly, leaving the elevator more prone to malfunctions and mishaps.

In fact, some urban explorers have found themselves trapped in elevators with no way to escape – a scary scenario for anyone who’s ever suffered from claustrophobia.

Even if you’re lucky enough to avoid getting stuck in an old elevator that’s still operational – it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe! The weight limit might not be accurate anymore (or even functional), making the cab potentially unstable. This could cause the lift to plummet unexpectedly while you’re inside, leading to serious injury or death.

It’s always best practice to steer clear of any elevators unless you are absolutely certain that they have undergone recent maintenance checks by a licensed professional.

The Importance of Safety

It goes without saying that safety should be your number one priority when exploring abandoned buildings. Even though we may feel invincible and eager for adventure at times; reckless exploration can lead to disastrous consequences very quickly.

Make sure you inform someone else about where you will explore before leaving; this is especially crucial if you plan on going solo.
Ensure that your phone is charged and bring along additional power packs just incase battery life runs low.
Always pack an emergency kit: things like bandages, antiseptic wipes, bottled water etc. will come in handy in case of cuts or other injuries.
Never enter areas which seem structurally unsound or rickety; it’s better safe than sorry.
Keep a cool head while exploring – rushing through things can lead to accidents or worse outcomes.

Conclusion

Urban exploration is an exciting hobby but one that carries its share of risks as well. Unsafe staircases and elevators are among them so always exercise caution before attempting anything dangerous or challenging.

Take note of these tips mentioned above whenever climbing stairs during your adventures: wear appropriate footwear, use hands wherever possible, and be aware of surroundings. Steer clear of elevators unless they are up-to-date with maintenance checks and never enter any questionable areas that seem too unstable to handle.

Remember, safety should always come first when exploring abandoned buildings or other structures – so don’t take unnecessary risks for the sake of adventure!
