Exploring Abandoned Prisons: A Glimpse into the Controversial Role of Incarceration in Society

Prisons are often a topic of controversy and debate. While some see them as necessary for maintaining public safety, others view them as inhumane and ineffective. As an urban explorer, I had the opportunity to explore several abandoned prisons and speak with experts about their role in society.

One thing that struck me during my exploration was the sheer size of these facilities. Many were built to accommodate thousands of inmates, with sprawling complexes featuring cell blocks, exercise yards, and administrative buildings. It’s clear that prisons are a major industry in America, employing hundreds of thousands of people across the country.

However, despite their impressive scale and organization, many experts argue that prisons are not doing enough to address the root causes of crime or rehabilitate offenders. In fact, some studies have shown that incarceration can actually lead to higher rates of recidivism (re-offending) due to the lack of opportunities for education and job training while behind bars.

I spoke with one former inmate who spent over a decade in various correctional institutions throughout his life. He described the experience as dehumanizing and isolating – a place where inmates are stripped of their autonomy and treated more like animals than human beings. He also noted that violence is rampant within prison walls, both between inmates themselves as well as between prisoners and guards.

Despite these critiques, there are those who believe that prisons serve an important function in our justice system. They argue that certain crimes necessitate punishment rather than rehabilitation – particularly crimes against persons such as murder or rape.

Ultimately though it seems clear that something needs to change within our prison system if we hope to reduce crime rates over time. Whether through increased funding for education programs or alternative forms of sentencing such as community service or restorative justice practices – it’s clear that simply locking people up is not working on its own.

In conclusion my journey into exploring abandoned prisons led me down path towards uncovering many issues affecting our justice system which are often overlooked. While the debate over the role of prisons in society is complex, it’s clear that we need to start thinking more critically about how we approach issues of crime and punishment if we hope to see real change in our communities.
