Portland is one city leading the way in sustainable urban development through effective stormwater management practices. In 1993, Portland adopted a comprehensive approach to managing stormwater runoff through its “Stormwater Management Plan.” This plan includes various strategies such as green streets, ecoroofs, permeable pavements, and rain gardens that have been implemented successfully over time resulting in impressive results regarding reduced flood damage costs while delivering multiple public benefits.

Another city taking a similar approach is New York City (NYC). NYC has implemented several programs aimed at reducing flooding risks associated with heavy rainfall events due to climate change impacts on its aging sewer system. One program worth noting is the Green Infrastructure Program that seeks to manage more than ten percent of impervious surfaces using techniques ranging from bioswales and tree pits to rooftop gardens before discharging into nearby waterways. The program’s co-benefits include creating new public spaces for recreation and education while enhancing beauty throughout the city’s neighborhoods.
