Microorganisms like bacteria convert dissolved organic matter into biomass while consuming oxygen in the process creating carbon dioxide gas.

This stage takes place in rectangular tanks called “activated sludge” with air diffusers blowing bubbles into them to ensure enough oxygen for microbial activity within them reducing pathogens found within wastewater making it safer for discharge downstream or reuse purposes if necessary.

3. Tertiary Treatment (Optional)

Tertiary treatments are optional but may be needed depending on local regulations or discharge standards required by authorities overseeing plant operations such as EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency). These include advanced filtration methods like sand filters, ultrafiltration membranes, and chemical treatments to remove nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that cause algae blooms in receiving waters.

4. Disinfection

The last stage of the treatment process is disinfection where treated wastewater undergoes disinfection using chemicals such as chlorine or UV light to kill remaining bacteria and viruses before discharging into nearby water bodies if not being reused within the plant itself.
