1. Primary Treatment:
The first step in sewage treatment is primary treatment, which focuses on removing large solids and debris from wastewater. When sewage enters a treatment facility, it passes through screens or grates to remove large objects like plastics or rags. After screening, the wastewater flows into settling tanks called “primary clarifiers.” In these tanks, gravity allows heavy particles to settle at the bottom as sludge while oils and lighter materials float to the surface for removal.

2. Secondary Treatment:
After primary treatment comes secondary treatment, where microorganisms are used to break down organic matter present in sewage. This process takes place in an aerated tank called an “activated sludge basin.” Here, air is pumped into the tank to create an oxygen-rich environment that promotes bacterial growth. These bacteria consume organic compounds and convert them into carbon dioxide and water.

To improve efficiency during secondary treatment, some facilities use advanced methods like trickling filters or rotating biological contactors (RBCs). Trickling filters involve passing wastewater through a bed of rocks or plastic media coated with biofilm containing beneficial bacteria that degrade organic matter further. RBCs consist of multiple discs partially submerged in wastewater; as they rotate slowly through the liquid phase, they provide both aeration and surface area for bacterial growth.

3. Tertiary Treatment:
While secondary treatment significantly reduces contaminants from wastewater, tertiary treatment further purifies it by removing any remaining suspended solids and dissolved substances such as nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus). One common method employed is filtration using sand beds or membrane filters. Sand beds allow water to percolate through layers of sand, effectively trapping any remaining particles. Membrane filtration employs synthetic membranes with tiny pores that selectively remove contaminants while allowing clean water to pass through.

4. Disinfection:
After undergoing primary, secondary, and tertiary treatments, the wastewater is nearly free of harmful substances. However, before its safe discharge into rivers or oceans, disinfection is essential to eliminate disease-causing microorganisms. Chlorination is a commonly used method where chlorine gas or sodium hypochlorite solution is added to kill bacteria and viruses. Alternatively, ultraviolet (UV) radiation can be employed as it damages the DNA of microorganisms without adding any chemicals.

5. Sludge Treatment:
Throughout the treatment process, sludge accumulates as a byproduct containing solid materials removed from wastewater during settling processes. Sludge undergoes further treatment to reduce its volume and make it suitable for disposal or beneficial reuse. This may involve digestion in large tanks where bacteria break down organic matter anaerobically, producing biogas that can be used for energy generation. The resulting biosolids are then dewatered using mechanical processes like centrifugation or drying beds.
