In room-and-pillar mining, corridors are carved out leaving pillars of coal to support the roof. This method is less efficient but generally safer for miners. On the contrary, longwall mining involves the removal of entire panels of coal with the help of automated machinery, resulting in higher extraction rates but also posing greater risks to worker safety.
